The Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, And Explosives

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, otherwise known as the ATF, is one of 60 criminal justice programs under the Department of Justice. Their mission is to regulate and investigate crimes related to the above mentioned items. The ATF has been around in one way or another since the beginning of our nation. It started in 1791, when the first tax on distilled spirits was implemented by the new Secretary to the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton (1). Supervisors, inspectors, and collectors were appointed to oversee that distillers followed through with the taxes. While these taxes were helpful to the economy, they didn t go over well with the public. They were a contributing factor to the Whiskey Rebellion. Eventually the rebellion died out, but this brought about the creation of the Office of Internal Revenue in 1862 (1). Tax evasion and organized crime became such widespread activities that three detectives had to be called in to investigate the alcohol tax evaders. This was the first coordinated act between law enforcement and tax collectors. The three detectives were the forerunners to the ATF agents of today. One of the biggest events that happened in the history of the ATF was the 18th amendment that passed in 1919. This amendment banned the manufacture, sale and transport of alcoholic beverages (1).
